Characteristics

Plants robust, up to 1 m tall; leaves densely imbricate, shortly sheathing, reaching the inflorescence base. Inflorescences imbricate, numerous-flowered; bracts as tall as or overtopping the flowers. Flowers somewhat downward-facing, purple and silvery-green. Median sepal apiculate, deeply galeate, 12-18 mm tall x 8-12 mm deep, galea entrance rotund; spur cylindrical, gently or rarely sharply decurved, shallowly grooved below and emarginate, 10-20 mm long; lateral sepals patent, narrowly to broadly oblong, 12-16 mm long. Petals lorate, apical lobe often somewhat bilobed, petal base parallel to the anther, apical half curved upwards behind it, apex deflexed forwards, basal anticous lobe oblong, flanking the stigma, c. 5 mm long. Lip patent, fleshy, lorate to obovate, 5-10 mm long. Anther horizontal; stigma horizontal, equally tripulvinate; lateral rostellum lobes erect, canaliculate, fused to the petals, enclosing the viscidia, central lobe fleshy.

Terrestrial herb, robust, geophyte, 0.4-1.0 m high; root tubers present. Leaves 3-6, cauline, sheathed, dashed with reddish stripes basally, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, imbricate. Inflorescence a dense spike, cylindrical. Flowers 15-35, resupinate, purple, lateral sepals and lip greenish yellow, texture like crystals. Sepals 12-18 mm long, median sepal galeate, horizontal; spur slender, cylindrical, horizontal, gradually decurved, 10-20 mm long. Lip 5-10 mm long, strap-shaped to obovate, decurved.
