Characteristics

Plants slender, 300-500 (-600) mm tall; sterile shoots slender, 20-30 mm long, basal sheaths usually 2, outer hyaline, inner green apically, leaves usually 3, conduplicate, semi-erect; fertile shoots: cauline leaves 8-12, lax, grading into the floral bracts. Inflorescences dense, many-flowered; bracts occasionally overtopping the flowers. Flowers facing down, scarlet red with white or yellow petals and lip; scentless. Median sepal galeate, galea 4.5-5.5 x c. 5 x 4 mm deep; spur soon decurved, 3-4.5 mm long; lateral sepals patªent or descending, parallel to ovary, oblong, flat, 4.5-5.5 x c. 2.5 mm, apiculi well-developed. Petªals erect, obliquely ovate, 3.5-4.5 x c. 2.5 mm, deªflexed inwards from about the middle, thus formªing 2 passages leading through the galea to the spur. Lip linear, acute, 4.5-5.5 mm long. Anther horizontal; stigma shortly stipitate; lateral rostelªlum lobes erect or angled forwards.
