An orchid. It grows 25-80 cm tall. The flowering stems have sword shaped leaves that sheath the stem. The flowering spike is long and slender. The flowers are yellow with orange marks. They are 1 cm across.
Fertile shoots slender to robust, 40–90 cm tall; cauline leaves imbricate, the basal leaf completely sheathing, the remainder with small free blades 5–9 × 1–3(4) cm, acute or apiculate.
Sheathing lanceolate leaves on flowering stems; foliage leaves on separate shoot, narrow, up to 15 in. long
Sterile shoots to 15 cm tall, with 2–3 erect, acute narrowly elliptic conduplicate leaves 15–20 × 4 cm.
Dorsal sepal obovate, obtuse, galea 6–9 mm long, 4–7 mm wide and 2–3 mm deep, curved to face down.
Spur pendent from the middle of the galea, 7–12 mm long, ± inflated in the lower half, subacute.
Lateral sepals 6–9 × 3–6 mm, narrowly oblong, obtuse to subacute, spreading sideways.
Inflorescence dense, 15–30 cm long, cylindrical, tapering, 50–200-flowered.
Flowers c. 1 cm in diameter, bright yellow or yellow with orange mottling.
Bracts 1.5–2.5 cm long, acute to acuminate, with the apices reflexed.
Lip 5–9 mm long, linear, rarely irregularly toothed, pendent.
Stigma 0.5–1 mm tall, lateral lobes well developed.
