Characteristics

An orchid. It is a herb that grows in soil. The leafy stems are 15 cm long with 2-3 narrow leaves 20 cm long by 4 cm wide. The flowering shoots are 10-30 cm long with up to 150 flowers in a dense group. The flowers are 1 cm across and orange to red with darker markings.

Fertile shoots 40–70 cm tall; leaves imbricate, the basal 1–3 leaves small, completely sheathing, rounded to obtuse; the remainder 4–8 cm long, ovate to narrowly ovate, acute.
Sterile shoots slender to robust, up to 15 cm tall, with 2–3 narrowly elliptic, acute, erect, conduplicate leaves, up to 20 cm long and 4 cm wide.
Dorsal sepal galeate, 9–10 mm long and 3–4 mm wide, obovate, obtuse, curved to face ± downwards.
Lateral sepals 8–10 mm long, narrowly ovate, subacute, spreading or reflexed.
Bracts 1.5–2.5 cm long, lanceolate, acuminate, the apex reflexed, dry.
Flowers c. 1 cm in diameter, orange-red with darker mottling.
Terrestrial herb with separate sterile and fertile shoots.
Inflorescence dense, 10–30 cm long, c. 150-flowered.
Spur pendent, clavate, subacute, 7.5–10 mm long.
Lip ± pendent, 7–10 mm long, lorate, acute.
