Characteristics

Extensively branched, monoecious shrubs. Adult leaves decussate, closely imbricate. Male cones terminal, solitary, ovoid, resembling tips of vegetative branches, comprising 6-12 fertile scales; each scale bearing 2 abaxial microsporangia. Female cones terminal, solitary, ovoid to globular, comprising 2 decussate pairs of fertile scales with a central columella; outer scales infertile; inner scales woody, each with 2 erect ovules. Seeds with 2 or 3 wings.
