Characteristics

Woody herb up to 1.2 m. high; branchlets 4-winged (wings 1.5–2 mm. wide, narrowing at the nodes), appressed pubescent; nodes long-setose, setae 7–9 mm. long.. Leaf-lamina linear-obovate, 2.5–7.5 cm. long, 0.4–0.8 cm. wide, apex acute, base attenuate, sericeous-villous on both surfaces when young, becoming appressed pilose; midrib and 2 longitudinal nerves impressed above, prominent beneath; petiole 2–5(–10) mm. long.. Inflorescence terminal, 1-flowered or 2–3-flowered cymes; flowers 5-merous, subsessile.. Calyx-tube (fig. 12/6, p. 33) campanulate, 7–8.5 mm. long, 7 mm. in diameter, densely appressed setose, 1–3 setae arising from minute tubercles, setae up to 1.5 mm. long; lobes caducous, linear-oblong, 16 mm. long, 3.5 mm. wide, densely appressed setose externally; intersepalar teeth semicircular, setose.. Petals obovate, ± 24 mm. long, and 13 mm. wide.. Stamens 10, markedly unequal; 5 large stamens with anthers 10 mm. long, connective produced 15 mm., with a bilobed appendage 1 mm. long, filament 12 mm. long; 5 short stamens with anthers 9 mm. long, connective produced 2 mm., bilobed appendage ± 0.8 mm. long, filament 12 mm. long.. Ovary partially free.. Fruiting calyx globose, enlarging to 9 mm. long, 8 mm. in diameter; capsule setose at the apex, setae exserted.
