Characteristics

Leaves opposite; lamina 1·8–10·5 x 0·6–3·5 cm., oblong-lanceolate or ovate-oblong, round or subcordate at the base, acute at the apex, denticulate-serrate at the margin, each tooth ending in a bristle, the upper face dull green, with short subconic prominences each ending in a white appressed bristle, the under face whitish or pale green, ± densely lanate (hairs long, crispate, very slender), somewhat thick, longitudinally 3–5-nerved, the longitudinal nerves (covered beneath with scales similar to those of the branches but longer or ending in a ± long seta), the very close, parallel, straight, transverse ones and the reticulation impressed above and much raised beneath, usually (longitudinal nerves excepted) completely hidden by the indumentum; petiole 0·2–2 cm. long, scaly-setose.

Receptacle 7–9 x 5–6 mm., campanulate, densely and shortly setulose and with patent ± long terete capitate appendages, these setose throughout and stellate-setose at the apex (the bristles white, simple, those of the apex stouter and longer); intersepalar segments similar to the upper appendages of receptacle but longer.
Flowers 5-merous, subsessile, in short terminal compact panicles 4 x 3·5–4 cm., the pedicels up to 2 mm. long in fruit; bracts 10–13(15) x 6–8(17) mm., subcircular or broadly ovate, round or acute at the apex, reddish or brownish, dorsally appressed-setose, caducous.
Branches subcylindric, densely appressed-scaly, the scales c. 2 mm. long, dilated at the base, acute at apex, fimbriate at margin, brownish on the oldest branches and white on the youngest and on the inflorescence-axis.
Fructiferous receptacle 10–11 x 6–8 mm., ovoid-campanulate. Capsule subspherical or ovoid, a little shorter than the receptacle, densely setose on the upper half and with a crown of long white bristles at the apex.
Sepals c. 6 x 3·5 mm., oblong, oblique-truncate at the top, dorsally appressed-setose, with an appendage stellate-setose at the apex, caducous.
Longer stamens: anthers 8–12 mm. long; pedoconnective 13–15 mm. long with the appendage short.
Shorter stamens: anthers 8–9 mm. long; pedoconnective 3–4 mm. long with a small appendage.
