Characteristics

Woody herb 1.2 m. high; stem 4-angled; branchlets 4-winged (wings green, 1–2 mm. w ide), nodes long-setose, otherwise sparsely appressed setose.. Leaf-lamina narrowly ovate-elliptic, 1.5–4.5 cm. long, 0.6–1.4 cm. wide, apex acute, base rounded, appressed pilose on both surfaces at first, becoming glabrescent; midrib and 1 pair of lateral nerves impressed above, subprominent beneath; petiole 2 mm. long.. Inflorescence terminal, of solitary subsessile flowers in the axils of the upper branches, forming leafy racemes; flowers (4–)5-merous; bracts caducous, broadly ovate, 15 mm. long, 12 mm. wide, apiculate, margin ciliate, surface pubescent.. Calyx-tube (fig. 12/5, p. 33) broadly campanulate, 10–14 mm. long, 9–13 mm. in diameter, densely covered with obovate scales ± 0.7 mm. long and 0.5 mm. wide, the scales sericeous-setose, setae 1–3 mm. long and obscuring the scales; lobes caducous, linear-lanceolate, 13 mm. long, 4.5 mm. wide, densely sericeous; intersepalar appendages caducous, ligulate, ± 4 mm. long, 3 mm. w ide, setose.. Petals obovate, 35–40 mm. long, 25–30 mm. wide.. Stamens 10 or 8; large stamens with anthers 11–13 mm. long, free part of connective arcuate, 20 mm. long, bilobed appendage 3–4 mm. long, filament 12–15 mm. long; short stamens with anthers 10–13 mm. long, connective produced 3 mm., bilobed appendage 3 mm. long, filament 11–14 mm. long.. Fruit ing calyx with setose apex of capsule exserted.
