Characteristics

Leaves 1 or 2, 100–200 × 3–5 mm, folded, base often purple. Flower stem 100–200 mm, 1–5-flowered (usually 1 or 2). Flowers, 10–15 mm across, yellow with purplish petal stalks, red to red-brown bars and speckling, exterior surfaces also marked; petals unmarked, dorsal sepal mainly yellow with red-brown markings, labellum lobes yellow with bold red-brown markings, lateral sepals green or purplish. Dorsal sepal erect, 8–10 × 10–12 mm. Lateral sepals obliquely deflexed, recurved and crossed, 5–8 × 2 mm. Petals obliquely erect, widely divergent, 12–18 mm long; stalk 5–6 mm long, blackish; blade elliptic to ovate, 6–12 × 6–8 mm. Labellum 5–6 mm long; lateral lobes spreading, 5–7 × 3–5 mm, tips bluntly pointed; midlobe convex, margins downcurved, wedge-shaped when flattened, 4–6 × 2–3 mm, folded. Callus ridges 2, 4–5 mm long.

Environment

Widespread and locally common; growing in mallee communities on limestone plains and old, stabilised dunes in freely draining, calcareous sands. Less commonly in grassy woodland and shrubland in red clay loam (terra rossa) over limestone.
