Leaves 8–10, tufted, 20–80 × 2 mm, spirally twisted, base crimson. Flower stem 50–150 mm, 1–4-flowered. Flowers porrect to nodding, 15–20 mm across, yellow, spotted and blotched with brown, especially exterior surfaces, fragrant. Dorsal sepal erect or recurved, 7–10 × 5–6 mm. Lateral sepals deflexed, 12–15 × 2–2.5 mm. Petals usually recurved; stalk 3–4 mm, dark red-brown; blade ovate, 4–6 × 3–4 mm, often notched. Labellum 7–1 long; lateral lobes 4–6 × 2–3 mm long; midlobe spathulate, 6–8 × 3–4 mm, folded. Callus ridges 2, 4–5 mm long.
Sporadic and uncommon over most of its distribution, but more frequently encountered in S.A. It ranges from near the coast to drier inland areas growing in a variety of habitats including basalt grassland, grassy woodland, native pine woodland, mallee/broombush shrubland, sedgy grassland, dry sedgelands and heathland. Soils range from freely draining to seasonally wet and swampy, acid or calcareous, and include sand, terra rossa, brown clay loam and sandy peat.
