Characteristics

Leaves 2, 150–300 × 3–6 mm, folded. Flower stem 300–600 mm, 1–10-flowered. Flowers 50–60 mm across, mauve or purple, often with darker suffusions, labellum darker with a distinct yellow area around callus, fragrant. Dorsal sepal erect, 15–25 × 10–18 mm. Lateral sepals deflexed, 30–60 × 2–4 mm. Petals obliquely erect; stalk 3–6 mm long, dark coloured; blade broadly ovate, 10–20 × 9–15 mm. Labellum 12–18 mm long, with a short neck between midlobe and lateral lobes; lateral lobes 3–6 × 2–4 mm; midlobe broadly fan-shaped, 7–12 × 12–20 mm, often folded. Callus ridges 2, 4–5 mm long, divergent.

Found growing in a range of habitats including moist grassland and moist to wet areas in grassy woodland in loamy soil; among shrubs and tussocks in a range of drier forests in hard, silty, clay loam; among granite boulders on ridges and slopes in freely draining, gravelly soil; and in coastal forests in sandy or peaty soil.
