Characteristics

Scandent creeping suffrutex. Stems 4-angled, striate-ribbed, up to 1.8 m long. Leaflets ovate to broadly ovate, with prominent white coloured veins, 23-40 x 20-40 mm, mucrons absent, pubescent on both sides; petiole 15-20 mm long; stipules ovate-lanceolate, 5-6 x 3-4 mm. Flowers in axillary pseudo-umbels, peduncles much longer than petioles, without warts, 9-15 cm long, with 3 to 6 flowers; flowers 6-8 mm long; bracts linear-lanceolate, 1.0-1.5 x ±0.5 mm; bracteoles linear-lanceolate, 1-3 x 0.8-1.0 mm. Calyx puberulous, with equal lips, upper lip ±3 mm long, lower lip 3-4 mm long; carinal lobe length equal to lateral ones. Corolla purplish pink; standard reflexed, broadly obovate, purple at the tip, 6-8 x 6-8 mm, claw 2-3 mm long; wings obovate, 5-7 x 3-4 mm, claw 2-3 mm long; keel slightly shorter than wings, 4-5 x 2-3 mm, claw 2-3 mm long. Ovary narrowly oblong, 3 to 5-ovuled, 3-4 mm long. Fruit straight at first and becoming falcate, 25-30 x 5-7(-10) mm, glabrescent, not warty along the margins, 3 to 5-seeded. Seeds reniform or almost round, black.

Leaflets subrotund or rhombic-obovate, hispidulous, mucronulate, rigid; lower surface prominently 3-ribbed and veiny; lateral leaflet oblique. Inflorescences: racemes at first dense, then lengthening; flowers often in pairs; peduncles flexuous, elongate. Flowers purple-blue. Calyx: lobes triangular, acute, puberulous. Style glabrous, except immediately under stigma, terete; stigma penicillate. Pod acute at base, septate within, compressed, falcate, glabrous, 5-or 6-seeded; seeds dark brown.
