Leaves 1-foliolate; leaflet 4.5–28 × 1.6–16 cm, ovate-rhombic, acute mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, densely white tomentose when plant flowering, becoming more sparsely tomentose in fruit, one main vein at base dividing into 3 beyond the cuneate leaf base; petiole 1–10 mm long; stipules 5–13 mm long, ovate, striate, subpersistent.
Flowers axillary, solitary, in pairs or in 3–8-flowered fascicles, the late or lack of development of leaves gives these few-flowered fascicles the appearance of a pseudoraceme; all axes densely white tomentose; peduncle 2.8–4 cm long; rhachis 9.2–13.5 cm long; pedicels 4–15 mm long; bracts caducous; bracteoles 3–6 mm long, linear.
Ovary 7–11 mm long, linear-oblong, compressed, densely white tomentose; style 5–10 mm long; stigma minute, terminal, capitate, penicillate.
Erect herb to 50 cm tall, arising from a perennial woody rootstock, flowering with (in the Flora Zambesiaca area) or without leaves.
Calyx densely white tomentose; tube 3–4 mm long; lobes 3–5 mm long, upper pair fused for almost all of their length.
Standard deep-blue, 10–24 × 8–18 mm, round or almost so; wings purple; keel paler.
Pods 5–8.5 × 1–1.5 cm, oblanceolate, densely brown velutinous, 3–4-seeded.
Stems annual, densely white tomentose.
