Characteristics

Erect perennial subshrubby herb about 0·6 m. tall from a tough woody rootstock ± 20 cm. long and 10 cm. wide, usually flowering when the leaves are not completely expanded or even quite absent.. Stems very densely velvety with mostly spreading white hairs.. Leaves unifoliolate; leaflet rhomboid-elliptic to lanceolate, 4·5–16 cm. long, 1·6–6·2 cm. wide, acute or obtuse and mucronulate at the apex, cuneate at the base, densely velvety when young, but more sparsely pubescent on both surfaces when mature, usually conspicuously 3–5-nerved from just above the base, the main side nerves extending from up to half-way along to almost the entire length of the lamina; petiole 0–5 mm. long; petiolule 3–10 mm. long; stipules sometimes persistent, 0·7–1·3 cm. long, 2–5 mm. wide, veined.. Flowers axillary, solitary or paired or on leafless shoots appearing to be in dense false racemes; pedicels 0·6–1·5 cm. long; upper false bracts usually trifid; bracteoles ultimately deciduous, linear 3–6 mm. long.. Calyx densely whitish pubescent; tube ± 4 mm. long; lobes 3–5 mm. long, the upper pair joined to form a shortly bifid upper lip.. Standard purple inside, green veined with purple outside, obovate, 1·8–2·4 cm. long, 1·6–1·8 cm. wide, emarginate; keel pale.. Pods oblanceolate, 7–8·5 cm. long, 1·4–1·5 cm. wide, obliquely acute at the apex, densely velvety pubescent.. Immature seeds dark red, ovoid, compressed, longest dimension ± 7·5 mm.
More

Flowers axillary, solitary, in pairs or in 3–8-flowered fascicles, the late or lack of development of leaves gives these few-flowered fascicles the appearance of a pseudoraceme; all axes densely white tomentose; peduncle 2.8–4 cm long; rhachis 9.2–13.5 cm long; pedicels 4–15 mm long; bracts caducous; bracteoles 3–6 mm long, linear.
Ovary 7–11 mm long, linear-oblong, compressed, densely white tomentose; style 5–10 mm long; stigma minute, terminal, capitate, penicillate.
Erect herb to 50 cm tall, arising from a perennial woody rootstock, flowering with (in the Flora Zambesiaca area) or without leaves.
