Flowers axillary, solitary, in pairs or in 3–8-flowered fascicles; pedicels 1–8 mm long, glabrous or sparsely villous; bracts absent; bracteoles minute.
Calyx glabrous or sparsely villous; tube 2–3 mm long; lobes 1–1.5 mm long, linear-triangular, the upper pair fused for almost all of their length.
Ovary 3–4 mm long, linear-oblong, compressed, glabrous; style 3 mm long; stigma minute, terminal, capitate, penicillate.
Erect herb to 60 cm tall, arising from a perennial woody rootstock, flowering before the leaves appear.
Seeds mid-brown speckled black, 4–6 × 3–4 × 1–2 mm, oblong, compressed; hilum 2 mm long, white.
Pods 3.1–4 cm × 7–9 mm, oblong-elliptic, occasionally slightly falcate, glabrous, 2–3-seeded.
Standard pale mauve, 4–8 × 4–7 mm, almost round; wings and keel pale mauve, 7–8 mm long.
Stems annual, slender, glabrous.
