Characteristics

Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate; terminal leaflet 2.6–7.2 × 0.9–3.1 cm, elliptic to obovate, lateral leaflets 1.9–5.7 × 0.8–2.8 cm, elliptic to obovate, the leaflets pubescent on both surfaces; petiole 1–3.2 cm; rhachis 7–12 mm long; petiolules 1–2 mm long; stipules 6–12 × 2–4 mm, lanceolate, pubescent, striate, persistent.

Flowers axillary, solitary, in pairs or in 3–12-flowered fascicles, late or lack of development of the leaves giving these fascicles the appearance of a terminal pseudoraceme; pedicels 1–4(8) mm long, white pilose; bracts absent; bracteoles minute, caducous, placed on the pedicel well below the calyx.
Calyx spreading white-pubescent; tube 3–5 mm long; lower lobes 2–5 mm long, linear, triangular, central lobe twice as long as the laterals, upper pair shorter 1–2 mm long, fused for almost all of their length.
Ovary 6–7 mm long, linear-oblong, compressed, densely tomentose; style 5–7 mm long; stigma terminal, capitate, penicillate.
Standard purple, sometimes tinged greenish outside, 12–20 × 12–20 mm, round; wings and keel paler.
Stems annual, branched, angled, sometimes ribbed, sparsely to densely white or golden pilose.
Pods 2–4 cm × 4–7 mm, narrowly oblong, appressed pubescent or glabrous.
Erect herb to 1 m tall, arising from a perennial tuberous rootstock.
