Erect perennial herb, 30–80 cm. tall, from a stout woody rootstock ± 10 cm. long and 2 cm. wide.. Stems several, not or sparsely branched, pubescent.. Leaflets 3, paler beneath, narrowly oblong-elliptic to linear, 4–14 cm. long, 0·3–1·7 cm. wide, acute or almost rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrescent to silvery pubescent on both sides or with scattered hairs on the nerves only, very conspicuously 3-nerved from the base almost to the apex; petiole 3–7 mm. long, broad and channelled; rhachis 2–5 mm. long; petiolules 1–1·5 mm. long; stipules usually deciduous, narrowly ovate to lanceolate, 4–9 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, strongly ribbed.. Flowers 1–5(–10) in axillary fascicles; peduncle obsolete; pedicels 0·2–1·5 cm. long, pubescent; bracteoles small, linear.. Calyx pubescent; tube ± 4–5 mm. long; lobes linear-triangular, 3–10 mm. long, the upper pair joined for two-thirds of their length.. Standard pale greenish tinged with mauve outside, bright purplish-mauve inside, round, 0·8–1·7 cm. long, 0·9–1·3 cm. wide; wings pale mauve; keel pale green at base, mauve at the apex.. Pods linear-oblong, 3–4 cm. long, 6–7 mm. wide, finely pubescent on faces and hairy along the margins.. Seeds pinkish-grey to chestnut, densely mottled with black, irregularly subglobose, ovoid or quadrate, sometimes compressed, longest dimension 3·5–4·5 mm., shorter dimension 2·5–4 mm, 1·8–2·5 mm. thick; hilum minute and aril absent.

Seeds pinkish-grey to mid-brown, densely mottled black, 3–5 × 2–5 × 1–2 mm; subglobose, ovoid or quadrate, somewhat irregularly shaped, sometimes compressed; hilum minute.
Flowers axillary, in pairs or in 3–6(9)-flowered fascicles; pedicels 2–12 mm long, pubescent; bracts absent; bracteoles minute, linear.
Ovary 6–9 mm long, linear-oblong, compressed, densely pubescent; style 3–5 mm long; stigma minute, terminal, capitate, penicillate.
Calyx pubescent; tube 4–5 mm long; lobes 3–8 mm long, linear-triangular, the upper pair fused for most of their length.
Pods 2.2–3.5 cm × 6–7 mm, linear-oblong, pubescent on surfaces and along the margins, 4–8-seeded.
