Characteristics

Leaf-lamina 2–10 × 1·5–7·5 cm., broadly ovate, apex acuminate, margin dentate or crenate, base cordate, 7–9-nerved, tomentellous on both sides, dark green above, pale below, veins prominent below; petiole up to 6 cm. long, slender, with short stellate hairs and longer simple hairs or glabrescent; stipules 8–9 × 0·5–1 mm., linear, tomentellous, ciliate at the margins and apex.

Flowers pink, in axillary usually 3–5-flowered subumbellate cymes; peduncle and pedicels with an indumentum similar to that of the young branches, peduncles up to 7 cm. long; bracts 6–8 × 2 mm., lanceolate, acute, tomentellous.
Ovary ovoid, tomentose or densely pilose; loculi pubescent inside; ovules 4 per loculus; style 0·9–1·2 cm. long, pilose, at least below; stigmas recurved.
Stamens connate below for c. 2 mm.; staminodes c. 1 cm. long, linear, glabrous.
Calyx-lobes 1·6–1·9 × 0·4 cm., lanceolate-acuminate, tomentellous outside.
Shrub up to 5 m. tall; branches pubescent at first but soon glabrous.
Seeds c. 3 × 3·5 mm., dark brown, angular; testa corrugated.
Petals ± equal in length to the sepals, obliquely obovate.
Capsule c. 1·2 × 0·9 cm., oblong-ovoid.
