Leaf 20–30 mm across, round to heart-shaped, dull, grey to bluish grey with dark green veins and lines, smooth, whitish beneath; basal margins often crinkly. Flower stem 100–350 mm tall. Pedicel 8–15 mm long. Tepals 7–10 × 1.5–2 mm, pale green or pinkish. Labellum basal stalk 4–5 mm long, pale green or pink, unspotted. Labellum lamina 6–8 × 3–3.5 mm, uniformly dark reddish purple; head structure with a narrow neck, densely covered with shiny black, wart-like calli; middle section swollen, bulging below rest of lamina and tapered to tail, densely covered with short bristly hairs, these sometimes branched; tail straight, glabrous. Column 6–8 mm long; foot 5–6 mm long. Anther cap with curved apical point.
Widespread and common; growing in many different forested and shrubby or heathy habitats, particularly in moist, sandy soils near winter-wet swamps and low-lying, sandy flats.
