A small, yellowish, dioecious mud-moss 1-2 inches long, with few-branched suberect stems about 5 mm long, spreading and somewhat incurved at the point, or larger and floating; leaves about 1-2 mm long, lanceolate-acuminate from wide base, concave, homomallous-falcate at the branch-points; lower the leaf is either oblique or straight, widely attached to a thick axis, spreading, entire, with nerve often faint and usually ending at or about mid-leaf. Apical cells tumid, elliptical, chlorophyllose; lamina cells longer and narrower (50-100 x 8 µ), reduced again near the base to rhomboid, and with the alar cells numerous, rectangular or laxly ovoid, grouped in the corners or extending nearly across the base, pellucid but thick-walled. Branch leaves narrower, more pellucid and more acuminate. Female flowers abundant, small, with short, nerveless, spreading, pellucid leaves. Male flowers and fruit not seen.
