Drepanolejeunea hamatifolia (Hook.) Schiffner

Species

Bryophytes > Porellales > Lejeuneaceae > Drepanolejeunea

Characteristics

Monoicous, minute, pale yellow-yellow green, on bark on among bryophytes. Stem up lo 10 mm long, 30-40 µ in diameter, cortical cells about 12-20 µ long and broad, thick walled, with a few verruculous papills; slightly and subpinnately branched, branches widely spreading; rhizoids short, scarce. Leaves approximate, erecto-patent, the dorsal lobe convex, ovato-lanceolate, ± falcate, acuminate, apex frequently somewhat incurved and ending generally in two single cells, dorsal margin entire or with 1-3 spinous teeth, mostly one cell long, or with the teeth broad at base and obtuse, ventral (lateral) margin entire or with a single projecting cell forming an obtuse tooth, ventral lobule about half as large as the dorsal, inflated, the free margin involute except at the apex, with an elongated and somewhat curved 1-celled tooth 22-24 µ long at the free angle and a hyaline papilla at the base of the tooth at inner side. The keel strongly arched, crenulate by projecting cells. Marginal cells of the dorsal lobe 10-16 µ, inner cells about 20 µ, cells equally thickened, trigones small, cuticle smooth. Ocelli 1(-3), about 20 µ, occasionally in the base or middle part of the lobe. Amphigastria bilobed with diverging lanceolate lobes, 4-5 cells long, distal portion uniseriate, 2-4 cells long, the basal portion 2-3 cells high, inversely triangular. Oil bodies 2-4 per cell, 2-6, globose, seldom ellipsoid, 2-4 µ, compound, colourless-pale yellow. Male bracts with larger, inflated lobule, usually with 2-3 long teeth in the dorsal margin, Antheridia single, yellow-orange, ellipsoid, 30 x 40 µ. Male bracts numerous, approximate-distant, usually occupying almost the whole length of a branch. Female organs on short branch with a single innovation. Female bracts larger than the leaves, laxly complicate, dorsal lobe oblong-ovate, acuminate, spionous-compound, colourless-pale yellow. Male bracts with larger, inflated lobule, dentate, central lobe narrower, spinous-dentate-dentate, bracteole bilobed to 1/3, lobes acuminate, spinous-dentate. Perianth pyriform, sharply 5-angled above, the angles winged and spinous-setose, rostrum short. Propagula as short budlike branches from the side of the stem, with more or less deformed leaves and amphigastria.
