Characteristics

Perennial herb with prostrate and ascending stems, up to 25 cm. tall, branching from the base only.. Young branches and petioles with sparse, somewhat appressed, coarse stiff hairs.. Leaves alternate, except for the lowest 2 pairs of leaves on young plants which are apparently always opposite; stipules linear–lanceolate, up to 2 mm. long and 1.5 mm. wide; petiole up to 2.5 cm. long; lamina ovate, up to 3 cm. long and 2 cm. wide, base cuneate, margin dentate with 7–11 teeth on each side, apex acute, apical tooth longer than wide; lateral nerves 2–3 pairs, basal pair arching towards the midnerve and anastomosing with upper lateral nerves; upper surface with very sparse scattered stiff hairs, lower surface with stiff hairs on the nerves.. Inflorescences axillary involucres, 2–5 in the leaf-axils on the upper part of the stem, of two kinds occurring together, the majority bisexual, broadly campanulate up to 3 mm. in diameter with 1 ♀ flower and few–many ♂ flowers, others with only 1–2 ♀ flowers..
