Characteristics

A medium to large sized tree. It grows 17 m tall. The trunk is 40-60 cm across. The leaves are shiny and like soursop leaves. They are 8-12 cm long. The flowers are brownish-purple. They occur singly or in small groups in the axils of leaves. The fruit have several lobes and are red coloured. The flesh is red-pink coloured. The flesh is thin.

Environment

A tropical plant. Plants grow naturally in higher level rainforest areas on the Atlantic coast in Southern Brazil. It grows in well-drained soils.

Cultivation

Plants are grown from seed. The seeds are washed and rubbed from the very ripe fruit. The seed will only store for about 1 month. The seed should be scratched before sowing to assist germination.
