Characteristics

Annual with several prostrate to ascending stems. Leaves elliptic to broadly elliptic, entire, with sessile glandular hairs; lamina 1–2 cm long passing into a short petiole. Flowers in dense globular clusters in slender erect spikes; pedicels slender, 0.3–0.5 mm long. Terminal flower of cluster bisexual; tepals 3, free but persistent, with strongly inflated limb that has a rounded to spreading keel, ciliolate, otherwise glabrous; stamen 1; style 1. Lateral flowers of cluster female, otherwise similar to terminal flower. Pericarp adherent, smooth. Seed ellipsoidal, erect, c. 0.5 mm long; embryo lateral and basal; radicle inferior. Tepals and seed shed as unit.
