Trees 8--20(--25) m tall. Trunk 20--40 cm d.b.h., bark brown. Branchlets sparsely reddish sericeous tomentose when young but glabrescent. Stipules triangular, 1 cm, tomentose; petiole 2--4 mm thick; leaf blade elliptic, oblong, or obovate, 15--30 X 7--12 cm, almost leathery, shiny, tomentose when young but reddish sericeous tomentose only on adaxial surface when mature, base cuneate, apex acute to acuminate, lateral veins 16--25 pairs. Pedicel ca. 4 mm, rust colored tomentose. Sepals (2--)4(or 5), oblong, ca. 6 X 2 mm, outside rust colored tomentose, inside glabrous. Corolla 3--3.5 mm, lobes 2--2.5 mm; appendages petal-like, 3.5--4 mm. Filaments thick, enlarged at base; staminodes enlarged at base. Ovary glabrous. Style 1.5--2 mm. Fruit globose to ovoid, 4--4.5 cm, greenish brown to brown, rust colored tomentose, ribbed; stipe 1.2--1.5 cm; persistent sepals triangular, ca. 6 mm; 5-seeded. Seeds flat, shiny, 3.5--4 X 2--2.3 cm; scar at adaxial side.

A tropical plant. It grows between 100-1,000 m altitude. It occurs in primary and secondary forests. It is a light demanding tree, but needs shade when young. A temperature between 20-25°C is best. A rainfall of 1,300 mm is the minimum. It needs a deep, moist soil. In Yunnan.
