Characteristics

Perennial herb, 45–90 cm high; stems erect, main stem woody and short, branching distally with the lateral branches ascending and overtopping the main axes, densely leafy, minutely glandular, araneose or glabrous.. Leaves spiny, deeply pinnatisect, lanceolate in outline, 1–2.2(–5) cm long, 0.2–0.5 cm wide, base shortly decurrent, the lobes spiniferous with spiniferous lobules, glabrous above, glabrous or tomentose beneath.. Capitula 19–25 mm long, in terminal globose synflorescences 3–6 cm in diameter; phyllaries lanceolate, the outermost shortest and spatulate, 3.5–18 mm long, acuminate, the margins laciniate.. Corolla white or pale mauve, tube 4–7.5 mm long, glabrous, lobes 3–8 mm long, anthers brown to almost black.. Achenes ellipsoid, 12–13 mm long and 4.5–5 mm wide, densely hispid; pappus of narrow scales 2–3 mm long.
