Characteristics

Dioecious; growing in large lax mats; common in eastern forest localities; light green, suberect, densely pinnate, without paraphyllia, and not known fertile, except one capsule mentioned hereunder. Branches 5-10 mm long, complanately arranged, spreading at right angles to the stem, and uncinate at the apex. Leaves not compressed, numerous, falcate, and folding under; stem leaves 1 mm long, branch leaves 1.5-1.75 mm long, both from wide clasping base; nerve absent; margin slightly denticulate to near the base, strongly denticulate near the apex; cells narrowly vermicular, 70-100 µ long, the lower shorter and wider, without distinct alar cells, but with the outer row sometimes shorter. Perichaetium of many narrow, spreading, or reflexed lanceolate leaves enclosing the red inflorescence.
