Characteristics

Plants tufted, 0.2-0.8 m high; without rhizomes or stolons. Culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose; clusters of sterile branches absent. Leaf sheaths > 1 per culm, persistent, loosely convolute, mucro absent or minute. Male inflorescences with 21-500 spikelets, spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Female inflorescences with 2-20 spikelets, spathes longer than spikelets, Ovary unilocular; styles 3, bases free. Flowering time Oct.-Feb. Fruit an indehiscent nut; elaiosome absent.
