Characteristics

Plants tufted, 0.4-1.1 m high; without rhizomes or stolons. Culms unbranched, smooth or finely rugulose; clusters of sterile branches absent. Leaf sheaths > 1 per culm, persistent, loosely convolute, mucro small and erect. Male inflorescences with 50-500 spikelets or more; spathes persistent, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Female inflorescences with 6-50 spikelets; spathes longer than spikelets. Ovary unilocular; styles with bases free. Flowering time Apr.-Nov. Fruit an indehiscent nut; elaiosome absent.
