Characteristics

Scandent shrub to 1.5 m.; bark smooth, striate, whitish with scattered prominent lenticels; young wood ferruginous hairy.. Leaf-blades ovate, oblong or obovate, occasionally suborbicular, 8.2-10.8 cm. long, 4.3-7.4 cm. wide, shortly and abruptly acuminate, cuneate, entire or with shallow teeth in the upper half, chartaceous, ferruginous hairy in groove of midrib above, densely so on veins beneath, less so on leaf-surface beneath; main nerves distinct, 6-8 on either side of midrib; reticulations conspicuous beneath; petiole slender, 8-14 mm. long, densely ferruginous hairy.. Inflorescence an axillary raceme of±14 flowers, densely ferruginous hairy.. Flower 5-merous,±6 mm. in diameter; pedicels 2-3 mm. long.. Calyx cup-shaped, united halfway, 2-3 mm. in diameter; lobes ovate, densely ferruginous hairy.. Petals free, spreading or recurved, oblong, 3-3.5 mm. long, minutely pubescent on inner surface.. Stamens inserted quarter of the way up from base of corolla; anthers ovate, apiculate, on short filaments equalling the anthers in length.. Ovary subglobose or ovoid; style slender, ferruginous hairy; stigma 3-lobed.. Fruits reddish with raised markings, longitudinally ribbed (in herbarium material),±5 mm. in diameter (? immature), with persistent calyx and style-base, glabrous.
