Slender erect annual herb 30–55 cm tall; stems varyingly pubescent, especially in lower part, to glabrous or almost so.. Leaves sessile, the basal obovate, the median and upper oblanceolate, narrowly elliptic or lanceolate, 2.4–10.5 cm long, 0.2–1.5 cm wide, attenuate with petioloid base, margins remotely obscurely sinuate-serrate or sinuate-denticulate, apex obtuse, minutely apiculate, pilose to almost glabrous.. Capitula 2–5 in lax terminal corymbs, discoid, long-stalked; stalks of the individual capitula slender, shortly sparsely pubescent, especially just below the capitulum, to glabrous or almost so; involucre cylindrical, 6–8.5 mm long, 1–2 mm in diameter; phyllaries (4–)8, 5.5–8 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent.. Disc florets deep magenta to purple, corollas 6.3–6.8 mm long, lobes 1–1.2 mm long.. Achenes 2.2–2.4 mm long, glabrous; pappus 5–6 mm long.
