Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Emilia

Characteristics

Short-lived stoloniferous perennial herb, erect or often decumbent, 15-50 cm tall; stems slender, weak, unbranched or occasionally branched from the base, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Leaves linear to narrowly elliptic or oblanceolate, 14-70 x 1-6(-11) mm, densely to sparsely pubescent on both surfaces or ventral surface only, often glabrescent, trichomes eglandular, multicelled, tapering; apex acute or occasionally narrowly rounded; base sessile, broad or tapering; margins entire or rarely denticulate near apices, revolute when dry. Capitula 1-4 in lax terminal corymbs, homogamous, discoid, diameter 5-7 mm (across apices of involucral bracts), peduncles glabrous or very sparsely pubescent, 4.5-80(-135) mm long, with bracts mainly at base of branches, rarely along length. Involucre cylindrical with florets spreading beyond, involucral bracts/phyllaries 8, green tinged purple, tips purple or reddish, 5-8 mm long, with scarious margins, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, mainly near apex. Disc florets purple, mauve, magenta, lilac, pink, (15-)20-33 per capitulum, corolla 5-8 mm long, lobes 1.4-2.3 mm long, glandular at apices, tube 2.8-3.5 mm long. Stamens: anthers 1.9-2.0 mm long with narrow, acute to obtuse appendage (c. 0.25 mm long), sometimes tinged purple, bases minutely sagittate, filament collars slightly balusterform, 0.4-0.7 mm long. Style arms c. 0.6-0.8 mm long, apices shallowly penicillate with short fringing papillae on outer side. Cypselas cylindrical or elliptic due to tapered ends, brown or reddish brown when mature, 1.7-3.1 mm long, glabrous, distinctly ribbed. Pappus 3.5-5 mm long, white, persistent.

Leaves sessile, oblanceolate, narrowly elliptic, lanceolate or almost linear, 1.4–9 cm long, 0.1–1.9 cm wide, remotely obscurely denticulate, sparsely shortly pubescent at least beneath, often glabrescent, sometimes almost glabrous.. Capitula 1–4 in lax terminal corymbs, discoid; stalks of the individual capitula glabrous or sparsely pubescent; involucre cylindrical, 5–7 mm long, 1.5–2 mm in diameter; phyllaries 8(–9), green tinged purple, tipped reddish, 4.5–6 mm long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent at least near apex.. Disc florets purple or mauve, corolla 5.5–8 mm long, lobes 1.5–2.7 mm long, those of the outer florets the larger.. Achenes 1.7–3 mm long, glabrous; pappus 3.5–4 mm long.
Leafy stems weakly crispate-pubescent to glabrous in middle part. Basal leaves oblanceolate-linear to narrowly elliptic or linear-lanceolate, cuneate to attenuate at base. Heads 1-4 in each inflorescence, lax, discoid. Involucres 4.5-6.5 mm long. Achenes glabrous to sparsely hairy. Flowers pink to purple.
