Characteristics

A tree up to 40 ft. high (Mudd); branchlets densely and patently pilose, cylindrical, internodes up to 2 in. long; leaves opposite, oval, acute, up to 2 in. long and 1 in. wide, membranous, densely adpressed-hairy on both surfaces; petiole about 1 lin. long; flowers in terminal leafless ebracteate spikes; calyx densely silky outside; tube 4 lin. long, almost cylindrical; lobes oblong-lanceolate, acute, 1 1/4 lin. long; petals 8, membranous, linear; anthers linear, 1/2 lin. long; ovary densely pilose at the apex; style half as long as the calyx-tube; stigma subcapitate.

Hypanthium 4-lobed; tube cylindric, ± 9 mm long, base silky white-hairy, neck shortly hairy; sepals ± 4 mm long, ovate or lanceolate. Petaloid floral scales 4, bipartite, appearing as 8 linear or oblong lobes, almost as long as sepals, membranous. Stamens 8. Flowering time Dec.-May. Fruit a nut, enclosed in persistent base of hypanthium.
