Characteristics

Autoecious, shining green, matted and prostrate or suberect; stems dichotomously forked, 1-2 inches long, rooting occasionally, the forks subpinnately or irregularly and not complanately few-branched; leaves complanate, the side leaves spreading widely, surface leaves closely appressed, directed more up the stem; side leaves lanceolate from narrowed base, concave, with acute, often reflexed point; surface leaves rather wider, not striate; nerve usually not visible, but when seen it is very faint and double, very short or unequal. Margin slightly denticulate in the upper half, sometimes clearly denticulate; cells with linear-vermicular lumen, 100 µm long or more at mid-leaf, about 50 µm long at apex and base; alar cells segregated, quadrate, fairly large. Perichaetia often many in proximity; the bracts erect, inner bracts subulate-acuminate, nerveless, almost entire. Seta smooth, yellowish, 1-2 cm long; capsule erect, cylindrical, brown, with red mouth-band and no ring; teeth red, smooth and horizontally striate in the lower half, narrower, incurved, yellow and obliquely striate above, not papillose, and hyaline at the point, usually perforated in the upper half; inner peristome without membrane, exceedingly variable in length, usually much shorter and rudimentary, but sometimes fairly well developed and longitudinally striate. Calyptra white, naked.
