Similar in appearance and branching to E. dregeanus, but more compact; leaves shorter, wider, more boat-shaped, and all more appressed, either closely imbricate or laxly placed, usually directed up the stem; margin slightly denticulated near the apex, the basal margin narrowly reflexed, and the base attached up the stem from the decurrent leaf-centre. Nerve obsoletely 2-nerved; cells vermicular, 50-100 µm long, apical and basal cells shorter, all chlorophyllose when green; basal cells rather segregated, quadrate. Perichaetal leaves all erect and sheathing, up to 1 mm high, with lanceolate-acuminate, almost entire apex. Seta straight, red, smooth, 1/2 inch high; capsule erect, straight, regular, cylindrical, but widest near the base; ring not seen (said to be present and deciduous); outer peristome teeth erect, red below, papillose the whole length, not striate; inner processes very rudimentary. Columella far exserted. Male flowers small, globose, with few ovate-acute bracts.
