Characteristics

Small, evergreen, tuberous terrestrial orchids growing in clonal colonies. Leaf single, terete, elongate, narrow, hollow, glabrous. Inflorescence racemose, multiflowered, breaking through leaf at weak point. Flowers resupinate, pedicellate, colourful, opening widely, nearly actinomorphic, not closing at night. Sepals and petals free, broad, similar in size and shape, spreading widely. Labellum stiffly attached by a short claw to column base. Labellum lamina unlobed, flat or concave, shortly stalked. Callus of 2 basal, thickened structures adorned with club-tipped, ribbon-like appendages (false anthers). Column short, surrounded by greatly enlarged, spotted bluish wings with glandular trichomes; no basal foot. Pollinia 2, white, soft, mealy, attached directly to viscidium.
