Characteristics

Trees small, to 10 m tall. Branchlets gray, stout, densely brown tomentose, soon glabrate. Stipules caducous, not seen; petiole 1.5–3 cm, initially brown tomentose, glabrous when old; leaf blade oblong-elliptic, 7–15 × 2.5–5 cm, leathery, both surfaces densely tomentose when young, glabrescent when old, midvein prominent on both surfaces, lateral veins 9–11 pairs, base cuneate or attenuate, margin entire basally, remotely inconspicuously serrate apically, apex acute or shortly acuminate. Panicle 7–9 cm in diam., many flowered; peduncle densely brown tomentose; bracts not seen. Pedicel 2–3 mm, densely brown tomentose. Flowers ca. 1.5 cm in diam. Hypanthium cupular, abaxially brown tomentose. Sepals triangular-ovate, 3–4 mm; densely brown tomentose. Petals white, elliptic, ca. 5 × 3 mm. Stamens 20. Ovary pubescent, 4-or 5-loculed, with 2 ovules per locule; styles 4 or 5, white villous basally. Pome brown, globose, 1.5–2.5 cm in diam., tomentose and granular-punctate. Fl. Apr–May, fr. Aug–Sep.
