Characteristics

Small rosulate annual.. Leaves few, light green, subulate, relatively long, up to 5 cm. long, 0.8–1.7 mm. wide, exceeding the sheaths and often intermingling with the lower capitula, fenestrate, tapering to a fine acuminate tip.. Scapes very slender, several to numerous and radiating to form a dome-shaped mound, 2–12 cm. high, 0.2–0.3 mm. in diameter, 3–4-ribbed; sheaths shorter than the leaves, the mouth oblique with entire subacute limb.. Capitulum globose to ovoid, 2–3 mm. diameter, grey to blackish with paler involucral bracts, loose and untidy with prominent stigmas; involucral bracts as wide as the capitulum, pallid, scarious, 1.2–1.4 mm. long, elliptic to narrowly ovate, subacute, not reflexing; floral bracts oblanceolate-oblong, concave, subacute to shortly acuminate, scarious, flushed grey with the upper usually darker; receptacle glabrous to villous; flowers trimerous, ± 1 mm. long.. Male flowers: calyx spathate, grey, sepals connate below the middle, the free tips triangular, glabrous, acute; petals rudimentary, glabrous; anthers black.. Female flowers: sepals variable, subequal, usually flushed grey, narrowly lanceolate and slightly concave, varying to broader and deeply concave but not keeled, acute or acuminate, the margins glabrous, with a few short hairs, or occasionally conspicuously ciliate, the hairs 0.15–0.3 mm. long; petals subequal, linear, glabrous, vestigial glands usually present at least on the two smaller, sometimes emarginate, especially the larger.. Seeds ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, 0.35 mm. long, brown, glossy, ± smooth with a faint reticulation.. Fig. 3/4–6; fig. 4/1.
More
Small, rather delicate, tufted annual. Leaves few (usually fewer than the scapes), linear-acute, 1-5 cm long, 0.3-1.7 mm wide, tapering to a fine point, light green, often reaching the flowering heads. Scapes 4-50, radiating to form a dome, 2-13 cm long, 0.2-0.3 mm thick, 3-or 4-ribbed; sheaths 0.5-1.5 mm long, usually shorter than the leaves, obliquely split with a subacute limb. Heads ± spherical to ovoid, 1.5-3 mm in diameter, dull grey to blackish, appearing rather loose and untidy; receptacle glabrous to softly hairy. Involucral bracts as wide as the head, elliptic to narrowly obovate, 1.4-1.6 mm long, ascending, glossy, pale-grey to whitish. Floral bracts oblanceolate-obovate, 1.2-1.5 mm long, glabrous, thin, dry, subacute to shortly acuminate, flushed grey with upper ones darker. Flowers ±1 mm long. Male flowers: sepals 3, united below the middle, ±0.8-0.9 mm long, the free tips triangular, glabrous; petals rudimentary; anthers ±0.15 mm long, black. Female flowers: sepals 3, free, variable, subequal, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, 1-1.2 mm long, concave but not keeled, acute or acuminate, the margins glabrous or with a few short hairs or occasionally with long hairs: petals 3, free, subequal, linear, up to ±1 mm long, rudimentary glands usually present on at least the 2 smaller petals. Seeds ellipsoid to broadly ellipsoid, ±0.35 mm long, brown, glossy; seed coat almost smooth, very faintly net-like.
Caespitose, dome-shaped herb, rosulate-hydrophyte, 20-90 mm high. Leaves light green, linear-acuminate. Capitula dull blackish grey, loose, oblong-globose, ± 10 mm long; peduncle 45(-100) mm long; involucral bracts ± half as long as capitulum, reflexed with age, scarious; receptacle glabrous or rarely with few hairs. Female flower on short pedicel; sepals 3, free, subequal, lanceolate, not keeled, not winged, half folded, margins usually glabrous; petals 3, free, linear, subequal, smaller petal usually with rudimentary glands; ovary sessile, 3-locular; style typical. Male flower: sepals 3, connate below middle, free lobes triangular; lobes minute with apical black gland; petals rudimentary, grey; stamens 6; anthers black. Flowering time Feb. Fruit a trilobed capsule; locules globose.
Small tufted, dome-shaped annuals 20-100 mm tall. Leaves few, linear-acuminate. Capitula oblong-globose, c. 3 mm long, dull greyish black, on peduncles up to 45(-100) mm long; involucral bracts c. 10, pale, about half as long as capitulum, reflexed with age; floral bracts smaller, dark; receptacle conical, glabrous or rarely with a few stray hairs. Female flowers on short pedicels; sepals 3, ovate, concave, half-folded, dark; petals linear, acute, glabrous; ovary sessile, 3-locular; style typical. Male flowers: sepals 3, obliquely fused below; petal lobes minute with an apical black gland; stamens 6, with black anthers. Capsule trilobed, locules globose; seed ellipsoid, smooth, shiny, but reticulate and muricate under 400x magnification.
Dome-shaped annuals up to 130 mm tall. Leaves linear-acuminate, c. 10 mm long. Capitula oblong-globose, 2-3 mm in diam., dark grey on peduncles 20-100 mm long; involucral bracts c. 10, large, pale, acute, floral bracts smaller, dark, but much larger than sepals; receptacle conical with some long hairs. Female flower: sepals 3, c. 1-2 mm long, conchiform, not keeled, enclosing rest of flower, ovate-acuminate, blackish, margin whitish, bearing some coarse setae; dorsal sepal somewhat smaller; petals 3, narrowly spathulate, somewhat longer than sepals; ovary 3-locular; style short with 2 longer stigmas. Male flower typical; anthers black. Capsule 3-lobed, seeds ovoid, minutely reticulate and muricate.
