Characteristics

Leaves linear, ca. 13 cm, ca. 1.5 mm wide at middle, veins 5. Scapes ca. 7, to 22 cm, 4-ribbed; sheath 5--6 cm; receptacle glabrous or with very few short hairs; heads yellowish green, subglobose, ca. 2.5 × 4 mm; involucral bracts straw-colored, broadly ovate, 1.5--2 × 1.3--1.7 mm, margin hairy when young; floral bracts obovate to lanceolate, apex with a few white, clavate hairs. Male flowers: sepals spathelike, ca. 1.6 mm, apex 3-lobed, lobes with a few white, clavate hairs; petals 3, triangular, glabrous, gland black; anthers black. Female flowers: sepals ca. 2 mm, basally connate, margin hairy, apex 3-lobed; petals 3, clavate, fleshy, adaxially villous, glabrous at apex, gland black; ovary 3-loculed; style 3-cleft. Seeds oblong when young, ca. 0.6 mm; testa inconspicuously reticulate, prickles many, linear, truncate or 2-branched at apex. Fl. and fr. Aug--Oct.
