Characteristics

Leaves linear, 3.5--4 cm, 1.5--2 mm wide at middle, veins 5 or 6. Scapes ca. 10, ca. 4 cm, 4-ribbed; sheath 2--2.5 cm; receptacle glabrous; heads straw-colored at base, black at apex, turbinate, ca. 2 × 3--3.5 mm, 7-or 8-flowered; involucral bracts straw-colored, ovate to obovate, membranous; floral bracts ovate to linear-oblanceolate, glabrescent. Male flowers: sepals spathelike, 1.5--1.7 mm, glabrescent, apex 3-lobed; petals 3, broadly ovate, glabrous, gland black; anthers black. Female flowers: sepals ca. 2.3 mm, glabrescent, basally connate, apex 3-lobed; petals 3, narrowly elliptic to clavate, fleshy, glabrous, gland black; ovary 3-loculed; style 3-cleft. Seeds narrowly ovoid, ca. 0.8 mm; testa reticulate, prickles many, T-and Y-shaped.
