Characteristics

Tufted annual. Leaves in a rosette, linear but gradually tapering to a long, fine, point, 1-3.5(-10) cm long, 0.8-2.5 mm wide. Scapes 1 to several, (2-)7.5-10(-35) cm long, 0.2-0.8 mm diameter, 5-or more-ribbed; sheaths up to 10 cm long, usually longer than the leaves, shortly obliquely split with an acutely triangular limb, up to 5 mm long. Heads ± spherical, somewhat flattened, 2-5 mm in diameter, glossy black; receptacle shortly cylindrical, glabrous or with a few long soft hairs. Involucral bracts ±6, about half as long as the head, bluntly ovate, ±2 mm long, boatshaped, reflexing at maturity. Floral bracts like involucral bracts but smaller, ±1.5 mm long, scale-like, glabrous. Flowers 2-3.8 mm long. Male flowers borne at centre of the heads: sepals 3, linear, united below to form an oblique, 3-lobed tube, 0.75-1 mm long; petals 3, minute; anthers ±0.2 mm long, black. Female flowers: sepals 3, equal, boat-shaped, ±2.5 mm long, half folded and enclosing the flower, keel convex; petals absent or of 1-3 linear rudiments. Seeds broadly ellipsoid, 0.5-0.6 mm long, yellowish-brown; seed coat cells transversely elongate, aligned in vertical rows, with white, transverse, fringed ridges; appendages present on some of the cells.
