Characteristics

Small rosulate annual.. Leaves subulate, 1.2–1.8 cm. long, ± 1 mm. wide, fenestrate, acute.. Scapes up to ± 20, slender, 3–5 cm. high, 4-ribbed; sheaths equalling the leaves, inflated, the limb subacute becoming denticulate.. Capitulum depressed-globose, 4–6 mm. diameter, dirty white, fluffy with woolly hairs; involucral bracts as wide as the capitulum, pallid or greyish, scarious, obovate, 2 mm. long, villous with spreading, hyaline, tubercle-based, septate, twisted hairs, a few stouter opaque white hairs at the acute tip, not reflexing at maturity; floral bracts resembling the involucral but narrower, oblanceolate, villous with long hyaline hairs on the back and with white stout hairs at the tip; receptacle thinly pilose; flowers trimerous, 2.0–2.3 mm. long, pallid, subsessile.. Male flowers: calyx variable, the sepals almost free, narrowly oblong, white-villous above the middle, the two lateral keeled and connate with the flat median sepal only at the base, or variably connate with the median sepal sometimes almost to the tips; petals subequal, the tips exserted from the calyx, glandular and white-villous.. Female flowers: sepals narrowly oblong, lightly keeled, white-villous towards the tips; petals subequal, narrowly oblanceolate-oblong, glandular and white-villous on the inner face with hairs 0.3–0.4 mm. long.. Seeds ellipsoid, 0.4 mm. long, brown, longitudinally white striate-punctate.. Fig. 1/1–4.
