Characteristics

Leaves lanceolate, 4.1--7.3 cm × 2--3 mm, veins 7--11. Scapes 1--4, 17--19 cm, 5-ribbed; sheath 5.5--10 cm; receptacle densely hairy; heads ± blackish, globose to subglobose, 3--6.5 mm in diam.; involucral bracts straw-colored, broadly ovate-orbicular to obovate-oblanceolate, 3--4 × 2.5--3 mm, papery, glabrous, apex acute to obtuse; floral bracts obovate-oblanceolate, 2.5--4 × 1.5--2 mm, abaxially hispid toward acuminate to cuspidate apex. Male flowers: sepals 3, flat, ca. 1.5 mm, abaxially hairy toward 3-lobed apex, lobes acuminate at apex; petals 3, subequal, hoary, gland absent; stamens 6, anthers black. Female flowers: sepals 3, blackish, free, oblanceolate, ca. 2 mm, hoary along keel, apex acuminate, middle sepal flat, lateral ones keeled; petals 3, oblanceolate, ca. 2.5 × 0.4 mm, hairy adaxially and at apex, gland absent. Seeds ellipsoid, ca. 0.8 × 0.6 mm; testa reticulate, prickles 2 or 3 from transverse wall and 1 from longitudinal wall of cells, setiform. Fl. and fr. Nov.
