Characteristics

Geophyte, up to 500 mm high. Tuber irregularly shaped, with basal to lateral growing point, internally white, pink or red, up to 40 x 28 mm, warty but not forming stolons. Leaf solitary, erect; blade ovate to narrowly ovate, 50-100 x 20-60 mm, apiculate, margins reddish, glaucous, glabrous or sparsely hairy on abaxial surface towards base; sheath exserted. Flowers: in a lax 10-20-flowered raceme, produced before leaves; anthers turquoise or green; perianth segments dimorphic, white or cream-coloured with a dark green midvein and sometimes red-streaked; Nov.-Feb.
