Characteristics

Shrub, 1-2 m high; grows in masses forming low thickets. Branches armed with prickles. Leaves 3-foliate; petioles armed with prickles. Leaflets widely ovate or transversely elliptic, apiculate or subacute. Flowers orange-scarlet; horizontal or ascending at anthesis, not gaping; appearing simultaneously with leaves; peduncle 10 mm long. Calyx green with purple flush; tube widely campanulate; glabrous or thinly villous outside. Petals: standard tricoloured, red proximally grading to yellow distally with green tip; keel segments free. Stamens diadelphous, exserted. Flowering time spring to summer. Pod brown, constricted, armed with prickles. Seeds brown; hilum pale.
