Leaflets densely golden-velvety when young, less dense when mature, sometimes aculeate on midvein above; terminal leaflet 6–10 × 3.5–8 cm, subrhombic to rhombic to broadly ovate or elliptic to lanceolate; lateral leaflets 6.5–9 × 4–6 cm, ovate-lanceolate to ovate or subrhombic; petiole and rhachis sometimes aculeate; petiole 6–16 cm long; rhachis 1.5–4 cm long; stipels 1–2 mm long, petiolules 3–5 mm long; stipules 5–6 mm long, ovate-lanceolate.

Inflorescence erect, flowers appearing before or with young leaves; peduncle 10–20 cm long; rhachis 5–9 cm long, both densely grey tomentose; bracts linear, caducous; pedicels 2–4 mm long, densely grey tomentose; bracteoles 4–5 mm long, linear.
Corolla red, glabrous; standard 3–4.8 × 1–2 cm, narrowly elliptic, elliptic or oblong-elliptic; wings 7–14 × 4–6 mm; keel petals 4–9 × 4–7 mm.
Calyx spathaceous, 1.2–2 cm long, split ventrally almost to the base, densely white tomentose; lobes obscure, up to 3 mm long, incurved.
Seeds (fide Krukoff & Barneby) ochre, 8 × 6 mm, with a narrow black line near the hilum.
Vexillary stamen free almost to the base, others united along half their length.
Stems slender, up to 70 cm tall armed with scattered recurved prickles.
Ovary 1.5–1.8 cm long, narrowly cylindrical, densely grey tomentose.
Suffrutex with annual aerial stems arising from a woody rootstock.
