Characteristics

Leaflets 4–16.5 × 5–17.2 cm, palmately-lobed or rarely broadly ovate with acuminate apices, terminal lobe triangular, lateral lobes truncate, sometimes emarginate, base of leaflets truncate, glabrous, unarmed; petiole 5–19.5 cm long, glabrous, often with scattered prickles, with or without longitudinal ridges; rhachis 2.5–8 cm long, armed with scattered prickles; petiolules 5–9 mm long, armed with scattered prickles; stipules 8 mm long × 2 mm at base, triangular; stipels 3 mm long, ovate, caducous.

Inflorescence a pseudoraceme, flowers clustered in fascicles on a ferruginous tomentose to glabrescent peduncle (5)8–15(30) cm long; rhachis 6.5–15.6 cm long; pedicels 2–4 mm, fleshy, glabrous.
Calyx fusiform in bud, spathe-like, 1.5–2.8 cm long, split ventrally along its entire length by the emergent corolla, glabrous; lobes obscure, up to 3 mm long.
Standard scarlet, 3.8–5.8 × 2.4–4.2 cm, elliptic to ovate; wings 1.2–1.5 × 0.8–1 cm, keel petals free, 1–1.4 × 0.7–1.1 cm.
Tree (2)5–25 m tall; bark furrowed, heavily armed with scattered woody bosses tipped with spines to 2.5 cm long.
Pods straw-coloured, 11–39 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide, woody, moniliform, glabrous, dehiscent, 2–13-seeded.
Seeds orange-red, 1.3–1.5 × 0.5–0.7 × 0.5–0.6 cm, reniform; hilum white, 6–7 mm long, elliptic.
