Stems branched, perennial, subterranean from an enlarged rootstock, Leaves with lateral leaflets 40-150 x 20-170 mm; terminal leaflet 55-320 x 35250 mm, armed with prickles on veins of upper and lower surfaces; stipules triangular. Flowers: peduncles longer than aerial stems; calyx narrowly campanulate, distinctly 5-toothed; corolla bright red; Oct.-Dec. Pods subligneous, falcate, smooth, unarmed; seeds red.
