Characteristics

Leaves concolorous, sessile, mostly 6–11 x 1.5–4 cm., elliptic, acute at the apex, broadly cuneate to narrowly rounded below, semi-amplexicaul, sparsely denticulate to subentire on the margin, green and sparsely finely appressed white araneose on both surfaces; nervation clearly visible, subprominent and reticulate on both surfaces.

Stems annual, 1-several, simple or branching above, leafy to the apex, coarsely pilose-pubescent, the indumentum a mixture of fine matted-appressed whitish hairs and numerous large brownish patent hairs.
Phyllaries 8–10 mm. long, tapering lorate; margins reddish-purple and somewhat membranous, ± expanded and fimbriate-denticulate about the apex; inner phyllaries grading into the receptacular paleae.
Disk-floret corollas deep-red, mostly c. 14 mm. long, narrowly tubular below and abruptly dilated into a subcylindric-campanulate, deeply lobed limb c. 5 mm. long, lobes c. 4 mm. long, linear.
Involucres mostly c. 9 x 12 mm., increasing to c. 15 mm. wide when mature, becoming broadly campanulate and truncate at the base, araneose-lanate.
Achenes (immature) subcylindric, minutely puberulous, pappus of caducous barbellate setae c. 7 mm. long.
An erect suffrutex to c. 40 cm. tall, from a woody rootstock with numerous spreading, thong-like roots.
Capitula solitary and terminal on stem and apical branches.
Ray-florets absent.
