Characteristics

Erect annual herb; stems leafy, 25–60 cm tall, whitish-tomentose, glabrescent, often also with some glandular setae, branching from the upper leaf axils.. Leaves cauline, sessile, (narrowly) lanceolate, 4–10 cm long, 0.8–2.5 cm wide, slightly narrowed or attenuate towards the slightly expanded subauriculate base, minutely serrulate, obtuse to acute, shortly acuminate-apiculate, white or grey tomentose beneath, thinly araneose and glabrescent and sometimes persistently glandular-setulose above.. Capitula discoid, solitary at the branch apices on rather long tomentose stalks; involucre shortly campanulate-cylindrical, at first tomentose, glabrescent, 8–9 mm long; phyllaries 3-seriate, subequal, the outer lanceolate, laciniate-dentate, the inner ovate, acuminate, entire except at the apex, the longest ± 7 mm long; receptacle scales resembling the inner phyllaries.. Florets with corolla white, glabrous, 5–7 mm long, lobes narrowly oblong, 2 mm long.. Achenes 4.5–5 mm long, finely puberulous, ± smooth, with brown dots betweeen the ribs; pappus bristles tawny, 3.5–5 mm long.
More
Leaves discolorous, sessile, mostly 4–10 x 0.8–2.5 cm., narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, subacute at the apex, broadly cuneate to narrowly rounded sub-cordate below, semi-amplexicaul or sometimes narrowing slightly from below the middle before expanding into a subauriculate base; margins serrulate to subentire; upper surface dark-green, thinly araneose; lower surface appressed greyish araneose-lanate on both surfaces, often with scattered large brownish many-celled simple hairs.
Achenes to c. 5 mm. long, c. 2 mm. in diam., cylindric, obscurely 5-ribbed, glabrous sometimes sparsely finely puberulous at first, irregularly minutely pitted, carpopodium 5-lobed with a lobe at the base of each rib; pappus of caducous barbellate setae 4–5 mm. long.
Outer phyllaries from c. 4 mm. long, very narrowly triangular, spaced denticulate-pectinate on the margins; inner phyllaries to c. 7 mm. long, broadly triangular-ovate with membranous margins fimbriate denticulate about the apex.
Disk-floret corollas pale-yellowish to orange-coloured, mostly 5–7 mm. long, narrowly tubular below and abruptly dilated into a subcylindric-campanulate, deeply lobed limb, 2–3 mm. long, lobes c. 2 mm. long, linear.
Stems sparsely to much-branched, leafy, araneose-lanate or often sparsely so; indumentum a mixture of appressed fine whitish hairs and scattered large brownish patent hairs.
Involucres mostly 7–9 x 9–12 mm., increasing to c. 15 mm. wide, broadly campanulate, truncate at the base, densely araneose-lanate.
Capitula 3-many, solitary and terminal on leafy branches, stalks to c. 8 cm. long, ebracteate.
Receptacular paleae similar to the inner phyllaries, araneose-lanate outside.
An erect slender to bushy annual herb to c. 70 cm. tall.
Ray-florets absent.
