Characteristics

Plant to 3 m tall. Leaves subsessile or shortly petiolate; lamina lanceolate, acuminate, 40-60 cm long, 6-12 cm wide; ligule to 2 cm long, entire, ciliate. Inflorescence to 8 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, partially subterranean; flowers red, 4-6 per inflorescence; bracts pubescent; sterile bracts few, lanceolate-ovate, to 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide; fertile bracts lanceolate, 4-6 cm long; bracteoles to 5 cm long, pubescent. Calyx to 7 cm long, shortly 3-dentate, pubescent. Corolla tube c. 7 cm long; lobes 2-2.5 cm long. Labellum to 7 cm long, connate to filament in lower 1 cm, obscurely 3-lobed. Free part of filament 2-3 mm long; anther 1-1.3 cm long. Ovary 1-1.3 cm long, pubescent.
